SERVICE TO THE NATION

John C. Mooney began his career in public service as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army.  A former captain that led deployed Soldiers in both Germany and Iraq, Mooney was awarded, most notably, the Bronze Star Medal (2005), the Meritorious Service Medal (2010), the Army Commendation Medal (2007), and the Iraq Campaign Medal with two campaign stars (2005-06).  As a cadet, he earned the Basic Parachutist Badge (2001).

In addition to his military service, Mooney served the nation as a civilian for two years at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC.

SERVICE TO THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS

Mooney has been a member of the Massachusetts Bar and admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, among others, for more than a decade.  His legal career has brought him before more than 20 different trial courts in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Appeals Court, and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.  For the past eight years, he has served as an assistant district attorney.  As a prosecutor, he has focused primarily on removing repeat violent offenders and recidivist drug traffickers from our neighborhoods, responded to homicide scenes, and taught both recruit officers and detectives at the Boston Police Academy.  While he has secured hundreds of convictions, he has also used his discretion to provide second chances to hundreds of individuals genuinely seeking to become - or return to being - productive members of our society.

SERVICE TO HINGHAM

John C. Mooney was elected to the Hingham School Committee on May 3, 2025.  Previously, he was a commissioner on the Hingham Conservation Commission (2018-2022).

Mooney attended public primary and secondary schools.  He is a first generation American on his father's side (Killybegs, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland) and the first person in his family to attend college.  He is a graduate of The George Washington University (B.A.), The Johns Hopkins University (M.A.), and the University of Connecticut School of Law (J.D.).

John C. Mooney lives on West Street with his wife, Courtney;  his son, Patrick (HHS Class of 2038);  and,  his ferocious golden retriever puppy, Keith.

The Mooneys try to attend the Family Mass at Resurrection Parish every Sunday, but . . . they are sinners.  That said, they do -  always! - chauffeur Patrick to all of his activities, i.e., Hingham Youth Hockey, Hingham Little League, South Shore Baseball Club, and swimming lessons.

Please say hello if you see them around town or see John / Courtney on the MBTA Greenbush Line.
