SERVICE TO THE NATION

John C. Mooney began his career in public service as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army.  A former captain that led deployed Soldiers in both Germany and Iraq, Mooney was awarded, among others, the Bronze Star Medal,  the Meritorious Service Medal,  the Army Commendation Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal with two campaign stars. 


In addition to his military service, Mooney served the nation as a civilian employee for two years at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC.

SERVICE TO THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS

Mooney has been a member of the Massachusetts Bar and admitted to practice for more than a decade.  His legal career has brought him before more than 20 different trial courts in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Appeals Court, and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.  For the past eight years, he has served as an assistant district attorney.  As a prosecutor, he has focused primarily on removing repeat violent offenders and recidivist drug traffickers from our communities.  

SERVICE TO HINGHAM

John C. Mooney was elected to the Hingham School Committee on May 3, 2025.  Previously, he was a commissioner on the Hingham Conservation Commission (2018-2022). 

Mooney attended public primary and secondary schools.  He is a first generation American on his father's side (Killybegs, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland) and the first person in his family to attend college.  He is a graduate of The George Washington University (B.A.), The Johns Hopkins University (M.A.), and the University of Connecticut School of Law (J.D.).  


John C. Mooney lives on West Street with his wife, Courtney;  his son, Patrick (HHS Class of 2038);  and,  his ferocious golden retriever, Keith.
